Evaluation of Ves-Matic 60 System for the Estimation of Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate

Abstract
Background:
@EN Despite development in modern laboratory methodology, conventional methods of erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR) are widely used for its simplicity. Wintrobe and Westergren methods. Used in most hospital, are economic and do not require
electrical
power supply, but have disadvantages of difficulty in standardization and quality control, time-comsuming and biohazard risk as well. So we evaluated the clinical utilization of automatic ESR measurement, compared with Wintrobe method.
@ES Methods:
@EN We measured ESR with samples form 219 patients and volunteers.
The FDTA blood samples of the patients were tested with Wintrobe method and Ves-Matic 60 Release 2.1.0 (Diesse Diagnostica Senese S.R.L, 5305 Monteriggioni (SI), Italy). Undiluted specimens in dried Ves-tec tube were also tested with the two
methods.
For the evaluation of precision. More than 20 same samples were simultaneously tested by various methods such as 26 min, 46 min, undiluted-26 min and undiluted-46 min method. The undiluted-26 min method was selected for the measurement of
precisions of
3 different samples of low, medium and high ESR.
@ES Results:
@EN The CV of 26 minutes, 46 minutes, undiluted-26 minutes and undiluted-46 minutes were 5.4%, 3.9%, 5.9% and 13.7% respectively. The CV of undiluted -26 minutes of the low, medium and high ESR samples were 67%, 5.9% and 8.8% respectively, The
correlation coefficients with Wintrobe methods were 0.9834(p<0.001), 0.9760(p<0.001), 0.9749(p<0.001) and 0.9829(p<0.001).
@ES Conclusions:
@EN In the measurement of ESR, Ves Matic 60 with Ves-tec tube showed good correlation with Wintrobe method except the samples of low ESR, and had advantages of rapid of rapid and precise results over Wintrobe method. So, we suggest that the
Wintrobe
method can be replaced with Ves Matic 60 for clinical use(Korean J Clin Pathol 1996;16(3):280~7).
